چکیده

A high quality dataset on the photo-oxidation of benzene, toluene, p-xylene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene has been obtained from experiments in the European Photoreactor (EUPHORE), a large outdoor environmental reaction chamber. The experiments were designed to test sensitive features of detailed aromatic mechanisms, and the dataset has been used to evaluate the performance of the Master Chemical Mechanism Version 3 (MCMv3). An updated version (MCMv3.1) was constructed based on recent experimental data, and details of its development are described in a companion paper. The MCMv3.1 aromatic mechanisms have also been evaluated using the EUPHORE dataset. Significant deficiencies have been identified in the mechanisms, in particular: 1) an over-estimation of the ozone concentration, 2) an under-estimation of the NO oxidation rate, 3) an under-estimation of OH. The use of MCMv3.1 improves the model-measurement agreement in some areas but significant discrepancies remain.

Development of a detailed chemical mechanism (MCMv3.1) for the atmospheric oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons

The Master Chemical Mechanism has been updated from MCMv3 to MCMv3.1 in order to take into account recent improvements in the understanding of aromatic photo-oxidation. Newly available kinetic and product data from the literature have been incorporated into the mechanism. In particular, the degradation mechanisms for hydroxyarenes have been revised following the observation of high yields of ri...

Gas phase precursors to anthropogenic secondary organic aerosol: Using the Master Chemical Mechanism to probe detailed observations of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene photo-oxidation

A detailed gas-phase photochemical chamber box model, incorporating the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCMv3.1) degradation scheme for the model anthropogenic aromatic compound 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, has been used to simulate data measured during a series of aerosol chamber experiments in order to evaluate the mechanism under a variety of VOC/NOx conditions. The chamber model was used in the inter...

Assessing aromatic compound impacts on photochemical ozone generation utilizing an updated Perth airshed model

Atmospheric processing of aromatic compounds, which are known pollutants in urban air occurring predominantly from road transport sources, are a major contributor to photochemical oxidant formation as evidenced by the formation of ozone. It is believed that urban atmospheres contain a mixture of in excess of 100 speciated aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOC). Recent studies in understandin...

Evaluation of 1,3,5 trimethylbenzene degradation in the detailed tropospheric chemistry mechanism, MCMv3.1, using environmental chamber data

The degradation mechanism of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB) as implemented in the Master Chemical Mechanism version 3.1 (MCM) was evaluated using data from the environmental chamber at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The results show that the MCM provides a consistent description of the photo-oxidation of TMB/NO x mixtures for a 5 range of conditions. In all cases the agreement between the measureme...
